Chain Link Fencing

If You Read Nothing Else Before You Build a Chain Link Fence…READ THIS!

Chain link fencing may be the most popular fencing for every purpose. It is great choice to keep kids and pets in your yard and great deterrent to keep unwanted people out of your yard. Whatever reason you have for wanting to build a chain link fence there’s one thing you need to know about chain link fencing before you hire any contractor.

Chain link fences are made out of steel wire that is woven together. And the biggest enemy of steel is rust. We’ve all seen a rusty chain link fence—not a pretty sight. Fortunately we live in a modern society and have come up with a solution to rust. It’s called galvanizing. This process coats the steel in zinc, much like a gold plated coin, so it doesn’t rust.

I’d like to call your attention to the fact that there are two different ways that most fencing is galvanized.

One is the cheap way that will cause your fence to eventually rust

the other will give a durable rust free fence for years.

I’ll tell you about the cheap way first.

Cheap chain link fencing is galvanized by a process called electroplating. Although the galvanizing is brittle in this process—it protects from rust just fine.

The problem is, cheap fencing—galvanized using this process—is galvanized before its woven together. When the electroplated wire is woven together into the fence, the brittle galvanizing chips where the wires meet. This exposed the steel, which in turn rusts in these areas. Once a chain link fence begins to rust it is impossible to stop it. Before you know it you fence will be an unsightly weakened problem.

Fortunately there’s another way to galvanize chain link fencing. And this method doesn’t have the rust problem of electroplating.

If you want a quality fence that doesn’t rust you need fencing that is galvanized by a process called “hot dipped galvanized”. Here’s the important part. It’s galvanized or dipped after it’s been woven into a fence—not before.

Hot dipping not only creates a more durable coating than electroplating, because there’s no chipping you won’t have any problems with rust

There’s really only one choice of material to use when building a chain link fence—there’s no doubt about it.
