Wood Fencing

Everything You Need to Know About Wood Fencing

Who could say no to a wooden fence? They’re sturdy, elegant and functional. But if you want your fence to last you need to know the pitfalls of using cheap material.

We’ll start by talking about cedar. Cedar is known for its resistance to bugs and rotting. A beautiful and truly durable wood that can be counted on to last for decades.

Believe it or not those attributes depend on the type of cedar. That’s right, there’s more than one type of cedar and they don’t all share the same great qualities that cedar is known for.

What does this mean for you? Well… it’s simple. You just need to be aware of the different types of cedar and make sure your fence is built with cedar that has the desirable qualities that makes it so popular.

Let me explain. There are two main types of cedar used in construction. Especially here in Michigan. They are Michigan White cedar and Western Red cedar. Western Red cedar is the one that has all the wonderful qualities of cedar that you want. You see, it’s the oil in cedar that gives it its bug and water resistant properties. It’s also what gives cedar its red color.

On the other hand, Michigan White cedar, as its name implies—is white. It’s this color because it lacks the oil that, as you just learned, gives cedar all its desirable properties.

Not surprisingly white cedar is also cheaper than red cedar.

This is what you have to watch out for. Contractors that offer cedar fences at a cut-rate price are most likely using white cedar.

If it seems too good to be true it probably is.

Moving on now, we are going to talk about pressure treated wood next.

As you might imagine, just like cedar, not all pressure treated wood is of the same quality. Big surprise, huh?

One thing is for sure if your fence is built with the wrong type of pressure treated wood it will cause you problems later on. The biggest one is warping.

Let’s take a closer look.

A lot pressure treated wood especially the type sold at large home improvement stores—are called SPF. (Not like sunscreen.) This stands for spruce, pine or fur. These types of wood are fast growth soft wood. This type of wood is widely used for framing wood housed where warping is not a big issue. But, I think you’ll agree warping is a big issue if it’s happening on your fence.

Here’s a solution, you want your wooden fence to be built out of Southern Yellow Pine. Also known as SYP wood. It’s a slower growth hard wood which means that it’s more stable and much less likely to warp. Another area Southern Yellow Pine is superior to SPF wood is its ability to hold fasteners. Which is important when you’re building a fence.
